Ice Road Truckers Community

Connecting You To The Ice Road

Hi all,
Here in Australia we have a pretty Lazy way of pronouncing most things, commonly know as Aussie Slang, and it has a dictionary of that in its own right.

But common ones are also very interesting, so, I'd like to hear what you call these things!

Windscreen, the glass you look through from you drivers seat in your car or truck.

Esky, a box made from foam and plastic and foam, or fibreglass , to put your cold drink in with ice.

Ute, a vehicle i think you call the utility's or pick ups

Stubby, A bottle of cold beer

Stubby Cooler, a soft wetsuit material cover to keep your stubby cool.

Jocks, no......no a person, we wear them, also know as undies. your underwear,

Jimmy, the very American Drink, Jim Beam, often drank with Coke, yep Coca Cola. or could also be the very Aussie Singer Jimmy Barnes ex Cold Chisel (Band Name) very iconic Aussie.
An ex pat Scotsman

Telly, a T.V or television

Semi, a truck like what you call 18 wheelers, a semi is an articulated vehicle or prime mover with a single trailer, one with two trailers is called a B-Double

I will leave it at that for the moment, there are so many more, but we could be here for ever.
Let me know what you guys call these.

Or jump on to www.40fm.net and cgheck out our forum, "Through The Windscreen" to chat with other Aussie drivers.

Cheers

Well webmaster...

Wind screen is windshield in the US.

Esky is cooler or ice chest.

Ute is SUV for sports utility vehicle.

Stubby is cold one, or brewski.

Jocks are tidy whities, or jocky shorts. Or boxer shorts for the ones who prefer more...room.

I call whiskey saddle varnish or rotgut, but that varies from region to region. Jack Daniels is JD. Jim Beam is called just Jim Beam.

Telly is boob tube or TV.

Semi trucks we call semis...doubles we call doubles or wiggle wagons. Some of our states let us pull triples.

Our tractors that pull trailers are called large cars, petercars (if they are Peterbilt) or big rigs.

Keep 'em coming webmaster!!

Oh That one is Funny,
A tractor is something we find on a Farm, you know John Deere...etc.

We call them Prime Movers or the Truck.

Yeah the TV has other names, " The Idiot Box"

yeah whiskey is Scotch, as in Scotch Whiskey, Bourbon is what we call, JD or Jim Beam

With a nice Cold Stubby , we "wet our whistle" or are "as dry as a chip"

We call them Servo's you call them truckstops or something

We Steer From the Right whilst Driving on the left, you steer from the left whilst driving on the right.

We call the toilet the Dunny

The Sleeper Cab the BUNK

The Children are "kids", tin lids, sprockets or any other words you can think of sometimes.

if you go to KFC and you ask for some CHOOK, the guy at the counter will not even look at you strangely.

The BBQ is the BARBIE, no not the doll.

OH, there are so many, brain is fried, and they vary state to state, town to town sometimes .

I will try to think of some more, and write them down.

Cheers

Windshield, shields or protects driver, passenger, from wind and bugs.

Coolers are the boxes we use to keep beverages and picnic foods cool.

Pickups or pick em up trucks is best we have done so far on the utes.

Cold one or cold beer is still best that I know of for a stubby.

Stubby coolers are called Koozies by some as I think that may be what the manufacturer in this country decided to call them. I have actually Googled "Koozies" trying to find out how to get the iced tea stains out of mine. (I just threw it in the sink with the rest of the dirty dishes that were soaking in the suds, squeezed the suds through, rinsed and let dry and it worked great).

Jocks can be a derogatory, i.e. insulting term, as those are the humanoids one sees in some of our teen movies torturing the less athletic guys. Therefore, jock = mentally immature athlete. We are not so brand name about our drinks so whiskey and Coke will have whatever the bartender puts in that drink. Most of us refer to the 18-wheelers as semis also as we are also somewhat lazy about language. Some do say Jockey shorts whether those men's "briefs" were made by Hanes or Jockey or another company.
